Bay Area drummer Chris Gamper runs Herbie Hancock, Coltrane and Monk through a funk lens. Kit up front, not in the back row.
Wednesday, November 18
First Show: 6:30 PM | Doors @ 5:15 PM
Admission: $20 - $30
Chris Gamper is a San Francisco Bay Area drummer who records and performs as GamperDrums. He released two albums under his own name in 2009, Time Capture and Standard Funk, the latter tracked at Red Rooster Studios in Berkeley with bassists Sam Bevan and Aaron Germain, guitarist Michael Abraham and saxophonist Joe Cohen. Garth Webber, who played guitar in Miles Davis's band in 1986, engineered that session, and Stephen Hart (John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom, David Bowie's Black Tie White Noise) mixed and mastered it.
Standard Funk is what its title promises, a set list of Herbie Hancock's Chameleon, Coltrane's Giant Steps, Monk's Bemsha Swing and Chick Corea's Windows run through a funk lens. FunkJazz is that same idea built for a room, and Gamper is a Canopus endorser with a bandleader's habit, which is why the kit is the front line here and not the back row.
