🧠 Lecture: "When Art Was Dangerous: Surrealism During World War II"
🎙️ Speaker: Professor JR Pepper
Join us for a captivating evening exploring Surrealism at one of the most volatile moments in modern history. Born from the trauma of the Great War and mounting tensions before World War II, Surrealism became more than an artistic movement—it was a radical response to a world on the brink.
Prof. JR Pepper will trace how Nazi persecution and the branding of Surrealist creators as “degenerate artists” forced many to flee their homes under dire circumstances. Discover how these artists sought asylum in Mexico and the United States, and how exile, danger, and dislocation transformed their lives and work.
Prof. Pepper is an adjunct professor of art history at CUNY Brooklyn College, a freelance lecturer, photographer, and self-described “professional eccentric.” Widely recognized for her work in spirit photography, she has been featured in Haunted America: FAQ, Vice.com, and Musee Magazine, and is a regular lecturer with The Dead Ladies, Brooklyn Brainery, and the Long Island Convention of Horror. She is also a cemetery tour guide and author of two books on historic cemeteries.
