A BOLD, CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FILM on Urban Design w/ LAURIE OLIN
The Planners' Movie and Meet-up series continues with a screening of "SITTING STILL". Sponsored by the MA Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-MA) , the Consulting Planners of MA (CPM) and the Boston Society of Landscape Architects (BSLA) this event is destined to be yet another classic in the series!
SITTING STILL is award-winning filmmaker Gina Angelone’s 8th bold critically acclaimed film on urban design.
This original documentary focuses on one of the world’s most preeminent landscape architects and his profoundly social vision. Hailed as a modern-day Olmsted, Laurie Olin has helped transform the design of public space, revitalize the American city, and pave the way for future design leaders. This portrait of an artist is told through a prism of issues which have defined Olin’s life and work for the past fifty years: urbanization and our lost connection to nature, economic marginalization, and the grave importance of humanity in design.
Leading the post-film discussion will be Martha H. Lyon and Karen Janosky!
Martha H. Lyon, ASLA is principal of Martha Lyon Landscape Architecture, LLC, a Northampton, Massachusetts-based practice specializing in planning and design for historic and cultural landscapes. Significant projects include restoration of the Emily Dickinson Museum (Amherst, MA), Fort Allen Park (Portland, ME), Oneida Community Mansion House (Oneida, NY), Hyde Hall (Cooperstown, NY), and the Quarry Farm, summer home of Mark Twain (Elmira, NY). Martha holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts and has written and spoken extensively on the subject of American landscape history. She has long advocated for the importance of hand-drawing and rendering in the design process, and continues to use these techniques in her practice today.
Karen Janosky is a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Director of the Master in Landscape Architecture program, and teaches The Practice of Landscape Architecture as part of the Practice Platform. A graduate of the HGSD (MLA ’91) and registered landscape architect for over 20 years, she has led teams in the creation of beautifully crafted and culturally prominent civic parks, art museums, and campus sites, as well as strategic landscape plans for campuses and cities. She served in firm leadership roles at OLIN, Charles Anderson Landscape Architecture, Mithun and Gustafson Guthrie Nichol. Her work has been awarded nationally and locally by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the American Institute of Architects, and the New York Parks Council, and she has been widely published.
