🧠 Lecture: "Cinematic Storytelling: Lines of Sight & Visual Narrative"
🎤 Speaker: Professor Drew McClellan
Join us for an immersive evening as Professor Drew McClellan continues his acclaimed series, The Elements of Cinematic Design, with a deep dive into one of film’s most powerful yet overlooked tools: visual lines.
Lines are far more than edges in the frame—they are directional forces that guide the viewer’s eye, construct space, and quietly shape emotional response. From the calm stability of horizontals, to the power of verticals, to the tension of diagonals, you’ll explore how filmmakers use line to control visual intensity and narrative tone.
Through screening and analyzing iconic film clips, Professor McClellan will reveal how directors and cinematographers orchestrate lines through production design, blocking, and camera movement to create meaning—often without a single word of dialogue.
Professor McClellan is an award-winning educator, filmmaker, and creative executive who teaches at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and Arizona State University’s Sidney Poitier Film School, and has collaborated with Netflix, Apple, Beats by Dre, National Geographic, and more.
