This class explores the core principles of Limón Technique, including breath, opposition, suspension, weight and gravity, fall and recovery.
About the workshop:
This class explores the core principles of Limón Technique, including breath, opposition, suspension, weight and gravity, fall and recovery. Exercises and phrase work draw from classic Limón repertory as well as contemporary movement. These principles become a lens for exploring movement within and beyond a traditional Limón aesthetic.
Limón Technique grew out of the work of José Limón, who developed his approach to modern dance in the mid-20th century, building on the teachings of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. The technique emphasizes the expressive potential of breath, weight, gravity, and the natural rhythms of the body. Its influence continues through both the preservation of Limón’s repertory and the ongoing exploration of its principles by generations of dancers and choreographers.
A note from Aaron:
"I danced with the Limón Dance Company for many years, where I trained with Carla Maxwell, the company’s former and longest-serving Artistic Director, as well as numerous teachers who had worked directly with José Limón. This experience gave me a deep, firsthand connection to the technique, repertory, and artistic legacy of the company. As a performer, choreographer, and teacher, I continue to explore how the principles at the heart of Limón Technique can inform contemporary movement and offer dancers new ways of understanding the body and its expressive potential."
