Screen time is the wrong question

We have become fixated on “screen time” as the dominant measure of our digital lives. But in a world where screens are increasingly inescapable, it is a blunt and often misleading metric, one that can generate guilt or shame without telling us much about what we are actually doing online. Drawing on research in psychology, education and cognitive science, this talk looks beyond minutes and hours to examine how different forms of digital engagement affect attention, learning and wellbeing. It asks how we might navigate the increasingly blurred boundary between online and offline life with greater nuance, intention and agency

Dr Karl Sebire

Dr Karl Sebire is an educator, researcher and speaker specialising in attention, distraction and technology. His research has examined digital environments, learning, and our ability to focus in the age of distraction. He was previously Director of Learning Innovation at the University of Melbourne, is a Board Director of ADHD Australia, co-authored 'Un:stuck: helping teens and young adults flourish in an age of anxiety', and commentates on our complex relationship with technology.
