🧠 Lecture: "Operation Torch: The Fight for North Africa"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Charley Binkow
Join us for a captivating evening as Dr. Charley Binkow guides us through Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa that opened a new front in World War II. In 1942, fascist powers controlled much of Europe while Britain and the Soviet Union fought desperately to hold the line. With the United States newly in the war, Allied leaders faced a pivotal question: how could they strike back at the European continent?
Together, we’ll explore this often-overlooked campaign stretching from Morocco to Tunisia, and the critical decisions, strategic gambles, and political compromises that shaped the course of the conflict. We’ll examine unlikely alliances, fraught negotiations with a French empire under Nazi influence, and the bitter choices the Allies confronted as they balanced military necessity with political reality.
Dr. Binkow earned his PhD in American History at Boston University and currently teaches at Loyola High School in Los Angeles.
