Greeks in Ottoman Politics: A Venture amid Rising Nationalism and Imperial
Dr. Catherine Boura discusses the Young Turk Revolution and effect on the large numbers of the Greeks who lived in Ottoman territory.
The period which started with what became known in history as the Young Turk Revolution in 1908 and ended with the outbreak of the Balkan Wars in 1912, was marked by radical transformation that had a definitive effect on the large numbers of the Greeks who lived in Ottoman territory. The Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation has invited Dr. Catherine Boura, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in the Near East, to explore the divisions between Muslims and Christians that radicalized the Turkish leadership and paved the way to the Great War.
Dr. Catherine Boura has served in various posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, and in diplomatic posts in Nicosia, London, and Brussels, as Consul General in New York, Ambassador of Greece to Lebanon, to the UAE, and Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations. She holds a Ph.D. in History from King’s College, London University, and has published articles and books on the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire in the 20th century.
A reception will be held after the event, where copies of Dr. Boura’s book, The Secret ‘Constantinople Organisation’ 1908-1912, will be available for purchase, cash only, and for her to sign.
