🧠 Lecture: "Alone Together: How Headphones Are Changing Public Life"
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Lindsey Cormack
Join us for a thought-provoking evening as Prof. Lindsey Cormack explores how our ever-present headphones are reshaping public life and democratic society.
In “Alone Together,” Cormack examines what happens when shared spaces no longer produce shared experiences. What does it mean for casual interactions, awareness of strangers, tolerance for inconvenience, exposure to difference, and our sense of belonging when we can constantly curate what we hear? She asks what we gain from individualized sound—and what democratic life may quietly lose when we no longer have to listen to, or experience, one another.
Lindsey Cormack is an associate professor of political science at Stevens Institute of Technology whose work focuses on political communication, civic life, technology, and democratic participation. She is the creator of DCinbox, an archive and research platform that tracks official congressional communications, and the author of How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It). She also hosts Government That Doesn’t Suck, a podcast that looks at how government has tried to solve major public problems.
