Film Night: An Taibhse (The Ghost)
Film Screening: Get into the spirit of Samhain and Halloween with an unforgettable night of Irish horror.
As the veil between this world and the next grows thin, join us at the UICC for a special Film Night screening of An Taibhse (The Ghost) — John Farrelly’s atmospheric 2024 Irish horror film from Jackpot Films.
Set in post-Famine Ireland, An Taibhse follows a father and daughter who take work as caretakers of an isolated mansion. As the harsh winter closes in, what begins as a struggle simply to survive becomes something far more terrifying. Trapped by isolation and haunted by forces both seen and unseen, Éamon and his daughter Máire find themselves confronting the dark secrets of the house — and of their own past.
Rooted in Ireland's rich tradition of folklore and supernatural storytelling, An Taibhse draws on the timeless tradition of the ghost story while exploring themes of trauma, abuse, resilience and hope. The result is a chilling tale that is as much about what haunts us from the past as it is about the spirits that inhabit the present.
“Ghost stories are inherently about the past haunting the present, which is a fitting metaphor for trauma and abuse. These narratives externalize internal struggles, making the invisible visible.”
— John Farrelly, Director & Writer
Executive produced by acclaimed Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, An Taibhse combines the atmosphere of an isolated gothic thriller with deeply rooted Irish themes and folklore. At 93 minutes, this is a perfect Halloween-season film for anyone who enjoys a good ghost story — particularly one with an unmistakably Irish soul.
