Open Source, Closed Room: AI & the Future of Maintainers
Join us in person to chat about how AI is changing open source - and what maintainers need next.
Open Source, Closed Room: AI & the Future of Maintainers
Open-source software is built in public.
Some of its hardest conversations are not.
AI-assisted contributions are increasing.
Questions about provenance and attribution are getting harder.
Maintainers are being asked to review more, govern more and explain more — often without additional time or resources.
Open Source, Closed Room is a 15-person roundtable for people doing that work.
There are no presentations.
There is no livestream.
There is no recording.
The afternoon is structured around three facilitated conversations about contribution, ownership and sustainability in open-source projects.
The goal is not to reach one conclusion.
It is to give experienced contributors enough time and privacy to compare what they are seeing, question their assumptions and identify practices worth testing in their own communities.
Who The Room Is For
The roundtable is designed for people actively involved in open-source projects, including:
Maintainers
Regular contributors
Reviewers
Release managers
Documentation maintainers
Community or governance contributors
Security and infrastructure contributors
You do not need to work for a technology company.
Independent and volunteer maintainers are welcome.
The Three Conversations
Contribution
What happens when generating code, documentation and issues becomes dramatically easier?
How should maintainers evaluate AI-assisted contributions?
Where does automation reduce work — and where does it simply move more work onto reviewers?
Ownership
How should projects think about provenance, licensing and attribution when AI tools are part of the contribution process?
Which questions require clearer project policy?
Where are maintainers still operating without enough information?
Discussion during this session is general and is not legal advice.
Sustainability
How can projects remain open while supporting the people doing maintenance work?
What belongs to the community?
What can be commercialized without damaging trust?
Which project practices are proving sustainable - and which are not?
