Third Place Books welcomes Winter Hansen to our Ravenna store for the release of her new book, What the Sea Keeps, a tale of one girl's journey to rescue her beloved sister from a rebellious young merman who turns her into a mermaid. Author Lish McBride joins in conversation.

The Great Famine has arrived on Rathlin Island and Nerissa has no choice but to fish in the stormy waters off Rathlin with Da. When they fail to return, Finella assumes her premonition of disaster has come true. Now alone, she must find a way to outwit the lascivious rent collector or be forced to leave the island for an uncertain future. But instead of drowning with Da, Nerissa is rescued by Irvino, the rebellious young merman who magically changes her into a mermaid. Forbidden to interact with landwalkers, yet determined to seek out her sister, Nerissa must rely on cunning and courage as she challenges merfolk and sea monsters alike. Even if she survives, will she ever see Finella again?

About the Author . . .

Winter Hansen is a lifelong word nerd, cat devotee, and nature addict. She grew up reading and dreaming about far away realms, captivating legends, and magical creatures. For the last twenty years she has also been writing about them. When not crafting tales, she works as a freelance developmental editor and operator of a knife and tool sharpening business. In her free time, she hikes and makes art.

Lish McBride is the author of funny and creepy young adult books such as Hold Me Closer, Necromancer; Necromancing the Stone; Firebug; Pyromantic; and Curses. Her first book, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults title, a Morris Award finalist, and the winner of the Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award. Lish is a former indie bookseller, has a MFA from University of New Orleans, and prefers pie to cake. While she has no long term goals for world domination, she would like her own castle.
