Gallery Opening - Jim Fitzgerald: Between Snow and Silence

Gallery 270, founded in 1998 in Westwood, NJ, flourishes just 20 miles from the nexus of the fine art photographic marketplace. While over a hundred galleries actively sell photography in NYC, Gallery 270 succeeds by catering to experienced and novice collectors seeking an increasingly rare quality in the field – value. The gallery exists to serve its’ varied community while fostering an appreciation for, and the desire to own, the work of the distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is so much more intimately engaged. We also have a passion for great music and great musical photographers. As a full service gallery, we are able to find that special image or obscure photographer one may seek. A wide range of autographed monographs and out of print and vintage books delight photo book aficionados. We’re especially revered by both interested beginners just establishing a collection, and seasoned collectors who continue to add work, for our trustworthy guidance, accessibility, knowledge and friendliness. We welcome inquiries for appraisal, photo restoration, expert witness and management collection services, private or corporate.

Join us on Thursday 11/12 for the opening of Jim Fitzgerald: Between Snow and Silence. Celebrate with us and meet the artist!

Jim Fitzgerald: Between Snow and Silence
Join us Thursday, November 12 from 7:00 PM–9:00 PM for the opening of our newest gallery show, Jim Fitzgerald: Between Snow and Silence. Enjoy an evening of art with light refreshments, wine, and cheese.Jim's photographs are part of a fully bespoke, fully analogue process from start to finish, without the use of any digital techniques or intervention. Jim begins with a large format film camera handmade from fine hardwoods in his custom woodworking shop. Each image is composed upside down on ground glass. The exposed negatives are then transformed into prints through a rare, 19th century printing process called carbon transfer.

Focus Session and Demo
On Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 9:30am Jim will lead a Focus Session on his carbon prints. Stop by and learn about the process, and witness a demo in-store before the show opening on Thursday 11/12!

About the Artist | Jim Fitzgerald
Jim Fitzgerald is a Large and Ultra Large format photographer, camera builder, woodworker, educator and book artist currently living in Vancouver Washington. Jim’s professional career in the stone industry, specialty cement industry and his work in the restoration industry gave him a background and love of natural materials and the ability to work with his hands creatively. Jim’s early interest in photography in the mid-seventies led him on a path that eventually took him to devote all his efforts full time to his love of the art of photography. Jim’s love of the outdoors at an early age started with family camping trips to Yosemite, Sequoia and along the Oregon Coast. Jim has always been inspired by the works of Adams and Weston, was mentored by and assisted Per Volquartz in his workshops at various photographic locations in the Southwest. As a self-educated photographer Jim has always felt it important to absorb as much visual input as possible by studying the works of many photographers. Jim teaches frequent workshops at his home studio and LightBox Photographic in Astoria, Oregon and has given talks at photo associations and universities in both Oregon and Washington. Jim was recently added as a co-instructor for the Carbon workshop at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite. Jim dedicated himself to the carbon transfer process in 2007 and has since created, designed, printed, bound and in 2018 published his carbon transfer fine press edition which contains original carbon prints and carbon transfer text. This groundbreaking book Survivors I, documents the Black Oaks in Yosemite Valley and is his tribute to the Oaks, nature and Yosemite Valley. The carbon transfer process suits itself well to the work Jim creates. The unique relief, tonal range, depth of the images along with the archival qualities allow him to make a bold or subtle statement about his love of the process and natural world around him.
