Kuula Hetke / Perperúna Ensemble

Kuula Hetke / Perperúna Ensemble

Overview

Estonian flutes and electronics meet polyphonic songs from Greece, the Balkans and beyond in two very different sets.

Set 1 – Kuula Hetke

Kärt Pihlap and Katariina Tirmaste make up Kuula Hetke, an improvising flute duo from Estonia. The name means “listen to the moment”, which is a good way into their music. Traditional motifs from their home regions and their own compositions provide a starting point; on stage the two take those melodies apart and weave them back together.

Acoustic flutes, voice and electronics draw on sounds from Estonia, while improvisation keeps the pieces open. Each performance grows from what the two musicians hear and do in that moment.

Set 2 – Perperúna Ensemble

Perperúna brings together five voices with ties to Israel/Palestine, Greece, Italy, Spain and Germany – and a long memory of communal singing. Lorena Atrakzy, Dimitra Kandia, Angel, Saraï O’gara and Johanna Schlottke explore polyphonic songs from Greece, the Balkans and the Mediterranean diaspora. They study oral traditions and the stories tucked inside them, then give the songs a contemporary shape of their own.

The ensemble takes its name from an old Balkan rainmaking ritual in which women sang and danced through villages during drought. Their debut album “κεntóï”, released in 2026, offers new readings of traditional songs. On stage, the five voices bring these oral traditions into the present through polyphony and performance.

Set 1 – Kuula Hetke
