THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS AND THE PURSUIT OF PANCHO VILLA with Ranger Rik
Frederik Penn grew up in a Northern Virginia town steeped in Civil War-era folklore and historic wayside markers, where his father also shared stories about his time as a soldier in the Korean War. Penn himself served his country in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. After his service, Penn would go on to work for his country in the National Park Service, particularly at the Presidio of San Francisco, where his upbringing in history and storytelling came to the forefront.
Becoming affectionately known as Ranger Rik, he was an exceptional truthteller of the often-untold stories of the significant roles that people of color played, especially the striking contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers, the US Army's first all-black unit, in the growth of our parks. Even in retirement, Rik continues to bring these complex conversations out of the shadows in illuminating fashion.
