Overview

A volume of possibilities and practices to heighten and expand readers’ empathic imaginations and sensory awareness of the natural world

In partnership with the North Cascades Institute

Join Third Place Books and the North Cascades Institute for an evening with Humans & Nature Press’s Gavin Van Horn, as well as Gordon Miller and Jennifer Oakes, as we celebrate and discuss their newest anthology, Sensoria: Attending to the Wonder and Vitality of Nature.

This timely volume offers readers new ways of understanding relations in everyday encounters that link our inner and outer awareness—embodied experiences that shape what we see, hear, touch, taste, and smell, and the way these perceptions can help us to attend more closely and respectfully to the lifeworlds of other-than-human creatures.

This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book!

About the Nature of Writing Series. . .

A deep appreciation for the transformative power of literature and art has been at the heart of North Cascades Institute since the very beginning. The humanities provide important lenses through which we inhabit and understand our shared landscapes. Our Nature of Writing Speaker Series celebrates the creative minds illuminating the natural world with the turn of a page.

About the authors. . .

Gavin Van Horn, PhD, is the executive editor of Humans & Nature Press Books, the author of The Way of Coyote, and the coeditor of City Creatures: Animal Encounters in the Chicago Wilderness, Wildness: Relations of People and Place, the five-volume series Elementals, and the award-winning five-volume series Kinship: Belonging in a World of Relations. He currently resides in the ancestral lands of the Northern Chumash people in San Luis Obispo, California, where you can find him wandering the nearby hills and shores, senses awakened by black sage, Anna’s hummingbirds, and ocean funk. More about Gavin and his work can be found at www.storyforager.com.

Gordon Miller lives in the foothills of the Cascades outside Seattle, where he is professor emeritus of environmental studies at Seattle University. His books include Nature’s Fading Chorus: Classic and Contemporary Writings on Amphibians and the photographically illustrated edition of Goethe’s botanical classic The Metamorphosis of Plants. His current work focuses mainly on interpreting the lives of frogs in light of the organismic philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead and kindred thinkers, to complement the conventional mechanistic view of this animal that has long served as a model for humans, and to highlight their significance in the evolution of mind in nature.

Jennifer Oakes is a poet and novelist. Her most recent book of poems, We Can’t Tell if the Constellations Love
Us (42 Miles Press) won the 42 Miles Poetry Prize. Her previous books of poems were awarded the Brittingham Prize and the Four Lakes Prize. Jennifer is a former recipient of the PEN Northwest Wilderness Writing Residency and a contributing editor for Solstice Literary Magazine. A Minnesota native, Jennifer now lives in Seattle, Washington.
