ABOUT THE PANELIST ___________________
Nicole Bourgea is a D.C.-reared painter and muralist dedicated to using public art as a catalyst for inclusion, hope, and community connection. Raised by a single mother with limited financial resources, Bourgea gained an early artistic education through Washington, D.C.’s free public museums—an experience that deeply rooted her belief that art should be an accessible equalizer for everyone. Today, she partners with businesses, civic organizations, and grassroots initiatives to create vibrant public murals and fine art series that uplift neighborhoods. As a fellow runner, her latest portrait series captures the physical endurance and advocacy of Lakota athlete Jordan Whetstone, highlighting how fine art and movement can unite communities around social justice.
Jordan Brings Three White Horses Whetstone is a professional long-distance runner, filmmaker, and Lakota activist who leverages athletic endurance and visual storytelling as tools for social justice. Through her work on the trail and on screen, Whetstone amplifies Indigenous visibility and leads national awareness efforts for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR). Viewing distance running not merely as a sport, but as a sacred form of movement, ancestral connection, and community healing, she brings her platform to galleries, film festivals, and athletic stages across the country. As the featured subject of Nicole Bourgea’s portrait series, Whetstone bridges the gap between distance running, fine art, and grassroots advocacy.
