How to Survive Authoritarianism: A Russian’s Phrasebook for Everyday Life
Book Presentation: How to Survive Authoritarianism: A Russian’s Phrasebook for Everyday Life in America
How does authoritarianism become normal—and how can people recognize and resist it before it takes deeper root?
Senate Square Society welcomes Dan Storyev for a presentation of How to Survive Authoritarianism: A Russian’s Phrasebook for Everyday Life in America, co-authored with Maria Kuznetsova. Through 100 Russian words and expressions, the book explores how people describe, navigate, and challenge life under authoritarian rule. Blending political insight with humor, it examines what Russia’s experience can teach Americans about the language of power, repression, and resistance.
Drawing on his work as a conflict correspondent, human rights defender, and former head of OVD-Info’s English department, Storyev will discuss how authoritarian systems reshape everyday life—and how language can both disguise abuses and expose them. Join us for a conversation about recognizing warning signs, preserving independent thought, and the possibilities and limits of applying lessons from Russia to the United States.
At each of our events you can expect a warm atmosphere, an ability to network as well as complimentary refreshments.
RSVP is recommended, donations welcomed.
