Join master percussionist Jamal Mohamed this fall for a hands-on hand drumming & ethnic percussion series at La Cantera Arts Conservatory! Explore rhythms and techniques from cultures around the world on authentic instruments — hand drums, gongs, bells, shakers, and more.
Choose your level or take both - Stay after for a free style Jam Session
Beginner (Family-Friendly) — Wednesdays, 7 pm–8 pm
No experience needed! Learn fundamental technique, tone, and rhythm in a welcoming space for all ages.
Advanced — Wednesdays, 8:00–9:30pm
For drummers with prior experience ready to dive into polyrhythms, group timing, and more complex techniques.
Plus a special session with guest instructor Julia Alcantara on Flamenco Rhythms!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Jamal Mohamed is a master percussionist and educator who was born in Lebanon and raised in the Chicago area, where he absorbed blues and jazz alongside the Middle Eastern music of his home. He has taught percussion and directed the World Music Ensemble at SMU's Meadows School of the Arts, and founded the SMU-in-Bali study abroad program. He has performed with artists including Sting, Mark O'Connor, Toumani Diabaté and Giovanni Hidalgo, and has led workshops worldwide, from Berklee in Boston to Mexico City, Tokyo, Cairo and Hong Kong. A founding member of D'Drum, winner of DRUM! magazine's 2010 award for best percussion group, he collaborated with Stewart Copeland of The Police and the Dallas Symphony. Today he leads his own world music group, the Jamal Mohamed Ensemble, and brings decades of experience to students of every age and level
