Data Center Panel: How Data Center Size Changes the Energy Problem
Do gigawatt campuses justify their grid impacts by funding new infrastructure, or are smaller sites the better model?
Data centers now span three orders of magnitude, from modular deployments of a few megawatts to campuses approaching a gigawatt. The public conversation treats them as one category and asks whether they use too much power. The more useful question for an energy audience is what shape this buildout should take. A small or modular site can often fit into existing distribution capacity and be energized in months. A gigawatt campus cannot connect to a grid that does not yet exist, and in PJM the average wait from interconnection request to operation now runs past eight years. But scale also creates capability. A gigawatt load can finance its own generation, sign long-term contracts, build storage, and negotiate directly with utilities and regulators in ways a 5 MW operator never could.
So which is the better deal? Many distributed sites, easier to site and slot into existing headroom but with less procurement leverage and no ability to fund new capacity. Or concentrated campuses that strain one grid and one community but can bring new generation with them. This panel tests whether there is an optimum, or whether the answer depends entirely on which grid you land on.
