Beyond the Book Bans: The Samuels Public Library Story at Central Library

Samuels Public Library, located in Front Royal, Virginia, has been at the center of ongoing debates surrounding book challenges, intellectual freedom, library governance, and public funding. These issues intensified following organized efforts to challenge library materials and culminated in Warren County’s 2025 decision not to renew the library’s longstanding funding agreement, raising questions about the library’s financial stability and long-term future. Join Library Director Erin Rooney and Melody Hotek, At-Large Member of the Board of Trustees of Samuels Public Library, for a candid conversation about the recent challenges facing one of Virginia’s oldest and most respected public libraries.

During this program, library leaders will share their experiences navigating community controversy, defending access to information, responding to censorship concerns, and mobilizing public support during a period of unprecedented uncertainty in a discussion moderated by APL director Diane Kresh. This discussion offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from the leaders of Samuels Public Library about the evolving role of libraries in today’s society and the ongoing efforts to preserve intellectual freedom, public trust, and access to library services for future generations.

The Parking Garage at Central Library offers free two-hour parking for Library patrons (entrance on N. Quincy Street). The Parking Garage closes when the Library closes. Any vehicles left in the garage after hours may be retrieved when the library reopens. The library is also close the Virginia Square and Ballston metro stations as well as several bus lines.
