The Memory of Mohács – Hungarian Folk Music Concert
500 years after the Battle of Mohács, Tarsoly Band and Ákos Gubinecz tell its story through the living voice of Hungarian folk music.
About this event
In 1526, the Battle of Mohács changed the course of Hungarian history. It was a tragedy that tore apart not only a country but its people. Five hundred years later, Tarsoly Band and folk singer Ákos Gubinecz return to this moment through the language they know best: Hungarian folk music.
What to expect
- Live concert performed by five musicians on vocals, koboz (Hungarian lute), violins, viola and double bass
- A musical story in three movements: the years of peace, the tragedy of the battle, and the first glimmer of hope
- Authentic folk melodies from across the Carpathian Basin, including Transylvania, Moldavia, Upper Hungary and Hungary itself
- Music that is sincere, rhythmic and deeply felt, rooted in tradition yet speaking to today's audiences
- No prior knowledge of Hungarian history or music needed. The music tells the story.
The performers
Tarsoly Band was founded in 2010 by young musicians from the Bartók–Pikéthy Secondary School of Music in Vác, Hungary. They perform regularly at festivals in Hungary and abroad, have released several albums and collaborate with leading folk dance ensembles.
Ákos Gubinecz is a folk singer, teacher and performer who trained at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. His mission is to keep Hungarian folk song alive as a living language that speaks to everyone. He often places folk music in historical and literary contexts, as in this programme.
Performers: Ákos Gubinecz (vocals, koboz), Mátyás Bencze (violin), Norbert Ákos Blaskó (violin), Balázs Böröcz (viola), Tamás Laukó (double bass)
