After the Election: What changes for your business?

Overview

Join Greg Smith and Katie Bradford for breakfast and chat about how your vote can actually shake things for your business this election.

After the Election: What changes for your business? An election shifts the mood in every boardroom and every staffroom. It can also shift your KiwiSaver balance, your tax bill and the rules you run your business by. Add interest rates, global disruption and AI, and 2027 already has a full agenda.

Generate Investment Specialist Greg Smith and business and political journalist Katie Bradford are sitting down over breakfast. They will work through what different election outcomes could mean for the decisions NZ businesses make next year. What changes after election night?

Different coalition outcomes could produce very different settings for tax, regulation and business. Greg Smith and Katie Bradford unpack the plausible scenarios, and what each could mean for the way you plan, hire and invest.

What happens to your tax bill?
Capital gains tax, company and personal tax, trusts and investment incentives are all in play. What's actually being proposed, what could survive coalition negotiations, and where could the biggest changes land for business owners?

KiwiSaver: what will employing people cost?
KiwiSaver is already changing, with the default employee and employer contribution rate now 3.5% and scheduled to reach 4% in 2028. Further proposals could have significant implications for payroll costs, remuneration and employees' retirement savings.

Where are interest rates and the economy heading?
The OCR affects your borrowing costs, your customers and asset values. We'll look at where rates could go over the next 12 months, whether the NZ recovery is gaining momentum and what that means for investment and expansion.

What could derail the recovery?
From the Iran conflict and energy prices to tariffs and trade tensions, global events can quickly show up in NZ through fuel, freight, currencies and confidence. Which risks should businesses actually be paying attention to?

AI gets real: what changes in the next 12 months? Forget the five-year science fiction. What's usable now? Where will AI, autonomous systems and robotics start changing customer service, administration, sales, logistics, agriculture and manufacturing, and what regulation could arrive alongside them?

This isn't a political post-mortem or a crystal-ball exercise. It's a practical look at the decisions NZ business owners may face in 2027 - what could change, what probably won't, and what you can prepare for now.
