A Conversation about relationships inside and out of carceral spaces

Navigating and maintaining relationships while incarcerated and even after release requires levels of patience and understanding that is difficult to imagine, much less experience. Artist Karen Thomas spent 35 years incarcerated, and some of that time was spent at the Bedford Hills Correctinal Facility, where Elaine Lord served as superintendent. During that time, Karen had to find ways to cultivate relationships within the prison while also trying to maintain those that she had outside of prison. At the same time, Elaine Lord had to create space for the women, particularly mothers, at Bedford Hills to do the same.
