In The Matchbox is a haunting period thriller where family, legacy, bloodshed, and a centuries-old secret collide.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, Shuford's Sanctuary in Catawba County, North Carolina, serves as a safe haven and passageway for a diverse community searching for safety and a new beginning. But the sanctuary is thrown into terror when the landowner's youngest son is killed and a mysterious, feral beast appears to be responsible.

Desperate for answers, the community turns to renowned hunter Mansa Wendell, who is hired to track down the creature. What begins as a hunt soon becomes something far more sinister as Wendell encounters a nameless evil and a fate potentially worse than death.

Spanning generations from the 1890s to the late 1960s South, In The Matchbox evolves beyond a traditional horror story into a family saga about the extraordinary lengths people will go to protect those they love—and the consequences when the secrets of one generation become the burden of the next. The filmmakers describe the story as ultimately being driven by "bloodshed & brotherhood."

Decades later, the mystery lives on through Uncle Wendell, an elderly man carrying both a secret and a responsibility that must eventually be passed to someone else. His nephew Ronald, concerned that his uncle may be experiencing the early stages of dementia, begins investigating the family's history with the help of Professor Garrett, a renowned expert whose research draws him into the Wendell family's long-running battle with evil. Ronald's cousin Ray, meanwhile, is far more skeptical of Uncle Wendell's incredible stories and the family's long-held secret.
