Overview

An exploration of germinal Black playwrights and their influence on the Chicago theatre scene

Join us Tuesday, October 13th at 7:30 pm for our new series: The Ground on Which We Stand, an exploration of germinal Black playwrights and their influence on the Chicago theatre scene.

We're kicking it off with a conversation with Chuck Smith, resident director of the Goodman, and Chloë Jackson, Ph.D. Candidate in Theatre and Black Studies at Northwestern, on August Wilson’s legacy, and the impact his unique voice and attentiveness to Black culture have had on Chicago theatre, then and now.

This chat will be interactive but dramaturgically grounded. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask Chuck Smith questions, hear details about his process, learn about his relationship with Wilson’s work, and more!  The evening will also feature archival excerpts on Wilson and his resonances on Black theatre in Chicago.

Doors open at 7, conversation starts at 7:30. The bar will be open, and we'll have some bites from our friends over at Pizza Lobo!

Tickets are Pay What You Can, with a suggested $5 donation. All donations will go toward future programming and paying artists to serve as panelists for upcoming iterations of the series!
