From Beacon Hill to Roxbury: Black Bostonians' Quest for Citizenship
Experience Black Boston from its colonial origins to the present day.
From Beacon Hill to Roxbury: Black Bostonians' Quest for Citizenship is a powerful journey through Boston’s Black history, from its colonial origins to the present day. Through this immersive tour visitors will discover the contributions of Black Bostonians across more than 15-stops connecting Beacon Hill, the South End, and the historic hills of Roxbury.
The experience begins at the Museum of African American History with an exploration of Black colonial life, resistance and military service during the Revolutionary era. Guests then travel through Downtown Boston connecting the American Revolution’s promises to later Black struggles for citizenship and the abolition of slavery. Continuing through the South End, the tour ends in Roxbury, showcasing how Boston's historic and present Black communities shifted over time, are central to Boston’s progressive history, and remain vibrant communities today.
This is more than a tour of Black Historic landmarks. It is an opportunity to examine whose freedom was being defended, whose land was being occupied, whose labor sustained colonial Boston, and how Black and Indigenous people persisted in their quest for America to live up to its founding ideals.
