Someone radically different from ourselves. Can we, or is it even ethical to, embody another person’s life? Especially the life of someone who gives up their middle-class existence to live for six months on minimum wage in a border city. To live at the edge, to transform one’s identity, all in order to create a work that reflects on what we can never be: the other.Tijuana is a work by the collective Lagartijas tiradas al sol that emerged from actor Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez’s encounter with two texts: Cabeza de turco by Günter Wallraff and Andrés Solano’s chronicle Seis meses con el salario mínimo. The performance presents the experience of Lázaro, who for six months became Santiago Ramírez, a resident of Tijuana working for minimum wage in a local factory. The piece recounts this experience while investigating the possibilities and limits of representation: becoming someone else, attempting to live another person’s life, passing oneself off as another. “Isn’t that what acting is?” asks the collective of artists that make up Lagartijas tiradas al sol.
More Information
Tijuana premiered at the Escenas do Cambio festival in 2016 and has since been presented in numerous countries and in more than fifteen cities across Mexico.
