East Boston started as a set of sparsely inhabited islands in Boston Harbor and has since been transformed into a vibrant neighborhood known for its immigrant, maritime, political, and aviation history. Tales of working class Bostonians mingle with celebrated stories, including the flight that made Amelia Earhart an international celebrity, the foundation of the Kennedy dynasty, the beginning of international steamship travel in America, and the Continental Army’s first victory after Lexington and Concord.
On our 90-minute guided walking tour, we explore one of Boston’s most unsung neighborhoods. Stunning views of Boston along the water, combined with stories of fires, ship races, Immigrant detention, trains, planes, automobile tunnels, and even MONKEYS in Boston, make this path one of the most unique experiences in Boston history. Learn the sensational stories that explain how modern Boston was formed, all while looking out at the natural beauty and towering majesty of Boston’s shoreline and skyline.
Developed and launched in collaboration with Project Starboard as part of The Golden Thread, Starboard’s storytelling initiative connecting East Boston through history, culture, and place. This tour begins at Maverick Square T station and ends in Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina For a total walking distance of 1.3 miles One way.
