Jonn Del Toro Richardson is a Houston guitarist who built his reputation in other people's bands. He was Diunna Greenleaf's guitar player in Blue Mercy when the group won the 2005 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and he left town with the Albert King Award for the competition's most promising guitarist.
In 2004 he played guitar behind Pinetop Perkins at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas, on a bill with Robert Lockwood Jr., Honeyboy Edwards and Henry Townsend, for a live album that won the 2008 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. His own debut, Tengo Blues (VizzTone, 2015), which he produced with Anson Funderburgh, won the 2017 Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist Album. He spent years making other people sound like legends, and he learned exactly how they did it.
