Hamlet at North Lambeth L&R Club

A production of Shakespeare's tragedy with elements of short film, exploring the theme of lost youth and grief through the lens of memory.

"I'm just a little concerned about my future." / "My life seems unreal, my crime an illusion - a scene badly written in which I must play." / "I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth."

With elements of short film, this production explores the loss of youth (its innocence and its freedom) through the lens of memory. When faced with a future in a world that seems unbearable and perverted, how do we live, and how can love endure? In an unweeded garden possessed only by things rank and gross in nature, what flowers can grow?

It's one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies as you've never seen it before. Drawing inspiration from across the 20th century, this production anchors Shakespeare's transcendent explorations of grief and remembrance in living memory. 'The Graduate', Simon and Garfunkel, and 'Withnail and I' collide with Victorian ghost stories, Pre Raphaelite dreamy nostalgia, and post modern medievalism in this part-film-part-play meditation on what it means to live and love in spite of the harshest circumstances.
