Introduction to Ka’atung: Teduray Interlocking Rhythms + Magasik Dance

Come make music, move, and learn with Manilatown Ancestral!

Manilatown Academy invites you to a special hands-on introduction to Ka’atung, an interlocking gong tradition of the Teduray people of Mindanao, Philippines, together with Magasik, the social dance that accompanies the music.

Led by the Manilatown Ancestral Ensemble, this beginner-friendly workshop gives participants the chance to experience the relationship between rhythm, movement, community, and cultural tradition. Rather than simply watching a demonstration, participants will be invited to learn by doing—listening to one another, finding their place within the interlocking rhythms, and experiencing how music and movement come together.

No previous musical or dance experience is necessary. Whether you are reconnecting with Philippine cultural traditions or encountering these practices for the first time, you are warmly welcome.

Manilatown Ancestral is the music, movement, and cultural education program of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. Through hands-on learning, we explore living Philippine cultural traditions while creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds and generations to learn together in community.

Because this is a participatory workshop and instruction builds from the beginning of the session, we encourage everyone to arrive a few minutes early and be ready to begin together at 2:00 PM.

We want everyone to be able to participate. Free Community Tickets are available for this workshop—no purchase is required to attend. If you’d like to help sustain Manilatown Ancestral and keep our traditional arts programs accessible, you may instead choose a $5, $35, or $45 Supporter Ticket. Supporter tickets include special Manilatown thank-you gifts, which vary by contribution level. All ticket levels receive the same workshop experience. Please choose the level that works best for you.
