Bookbinding: Intro to Japanese Stab Binding

You will learn how to design and sew your very own Artist sketchbook. Create with expert teaching in the relaxed, welcoming environment of Discerning Palette Gallery. Frances will help you create loose abstract designs for your front and back covers using acrylics and inks, as they are drying you will be guided in how to mark out your pattern guideline, we will be initially working with the four hole stitch but information will be provided onto how to complete variations of the design. Once the covers are dry, you will mark out the holes and sew your book together.

All materials, instructions and equipment will be provided for you to complete at least one book in the session, depending on how fast you work you may be able to produce more than one, or try a different variation. Once you have made a book you will be expertly equipped to make more at home, these sketchbooks make lovely handmade gifts.

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for adults who are complete beginners. You don’t need to be good at art, plenty of support will be given. Come for the cosy, creative, fun experience.

What to expect

• The workshop will be 2.5 hours long with hot drinks and snacks available. There is also a toilet on site.

• We will be working with acrylics which are washable soap and water. Wear suitable clothes, you can bring an apron should you wish, gloves and some aprons will be available should you need them.

• We will also be working with sharp tools. Support will be shown how to work with these safely.

• You will go home with your finished artist sketchbook and instructions on how to continue at home. Small ‘Book kits’ will be available to purchase should you want to continue creating books.

• The nearest car park is St Mary's - which is free after 6 pm.

Running the workshop

Frances Daws is an award winning Artist from Wiltshire, who works across painting and printmaking. She studied her BA in Fine art in Falmouth and has since exhibited her work through Galleries, art fairs and Art trails. Alongside her own practice she has over 6 years in workshop experience and enjoys the teaching side as much as creating her own work.

Age Requirements

This workshop is designed primarily for adults, but young people aged 12 and over are very welcome to attend when accompanied by a responsible adult.

As we will be using lino-cutting tools, which are sharp, anyone under 18 must remain under the supervision of their accompanying adult throughout the workshop and follow the tutor's safety instructions.

Both the young person and accompanying adult will need to book a place on the workshop and participate in the session.

Unfortunately, we're unable to accommodate children under the age of 12 at this workshop.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

We completely understand that plans can change. If you can no longer attend your workshop, please let us know as soon as possible.

Cancelling your booking

If you cancel at least 7 days before the workshop, you can receive a full refund of the ticket price.

If you cancel less than 7 days before the workshop, we are unfortunately unable to offer a refund, as materials may already have been purchased and your place may be difficult to fill at short notice.

However, please do get in touch. Where possible, and subject to availability, we may be able to transfer your booking to another workshop date. Transfers are offered at our discretion and cannot be guaranteed.

You are also welcome to transfer your ticket to another person if you are unable to attend. Please contact us beforehand so that we can update the attendee details.

If we need to cancel or reschedule a workshop

Very occasionally, we may need to cancel or reschedule a workshop due to circumstances such as tutor illness, severe weather, insufficient bookings or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

If this happens, we will let you know as soon as possible and offer you the option to transfer your booking to another suitable workshop date. If the alternative date does not work for you, you will receive a full refund.

We reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum number of participants required for the session is not reached.

Refund requests

Please contact us at info@discerningpalette.com if you need to cancel or discuss your booking. We aim to respond to all refund and transfer requests within five working days.

Please note that we cannot reimburse any additional costs associated with attending the workshop, such as travel, accommodation or parking, if a workshop is cancelled or rescheduled.
