🧠 Lecture: "Can Nationalism Be Inclusive? The Case of Scotland"

🎤 Speaker: Dr. Aubrey Westfall

Boston fell in love with Scotland’s “Tartan Army” during the World Cup—fans known for traveling the world, making friends, and never causing trouble. That reputation isn’t accidental; it reflects a distinctive and intentional Scottish national identity.

In this talk, Dr. Aubrey Westfall explores how Scotland approaches immigration, belonging, and national membership—and what that reveals about the possibilities of an inclusive nationalism. Can national pride embrace diversity, progressive values, and global solidarity, rather than exclusion and inward focus? Using Scotland as a case study, this lecture examines how nationalism might transcend traditional borders and coexist with a more interconnected world.

Dr. Westfall is Professor of Political Science at Wheaton College (Norton, MA) and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. Her research focuses on the political and social inclusion of immigrants, women, and ethnic and religious minorities in Western democracies. She is the author of The Politics of Immigration in Scotland and co-author of The Politics of the Headscarf in the United States, with numerous journal publications.
