🧠 Lecture: "Gold & Greed: One of Wall Street’s Greatest Scandals"
🎤 Speaker: Professor Dan Breen
Join us for a riveting evening as Professor Dan Breen unravels one of the greatest scandals in Wall Street history. In September 1869, financiers Jay Gould—known as “The Mephistopheles of Wall Street”—and his partner “Jubilee Jim” Fisk used their influence with President Ulysses S. Grant to gain control of most of New York’s gold supply, just as international traders were desperate for gold.
Professor Breen will walk us through this audacious bid to corner the market, the dramatic collapse of the scheme, and the chaos that followed on the day that entered history as “Black Friday.” He will also explore the scandal’s strange aftermath and its lasting impact on American finance.
Dan Breen is a Professor of Legal Studies at Brandeis University. His forthcoming book on the public monuments of Boston is due out in 2027.
