The nature of humanitarian and development work often requires personnel to operate in environments that may be unstable, insecure or exposed to a range of security, environmental and emergency risks. These risks may arise from armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, theft, assault, abduction and hostage-taking, as well as from natural and environmental hazards such as flooding, unsafe waterways and other aquatic emergencies. It is therefore essential that staff develop the knowledge, awareness and practical skills required to identify risks, make informed decisions and respond effectively to emergencies while maintaining their own safety and that of others.

The Hostile Environmental Awareness and Aqua Emergency Response training is designed to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills for operating safely in challenging environments and responding effectively to security and water-related emergencies. The programme covers personal security, threat assessment, journey management, conflict and negotiation, kidnap and hostage survival, first aid and medical response, water safety, drowning prevention, water rescue, flood preparedness and emergency response.

The training endeavors to provide comprehensive coverage of the relevant issues in this area and is designed to put participants in stressful situations, preparing them for worst-case scenarios. Essential classroom theory is complemented by simulations of real-life situations.
