🧠 Lecture: "Build-A-Baby: Swipe Right for Beauty and Brains"

🎤 Speaker: Dr. Bhuma Krishnamachari

Humans have always tried to engineer the next generation—from choosing the “best” mate to using preimplantation genetic diagnosis to prevent serious diseases. But what happens when the goal shifts from preventing suffering to creating a so-called perfect designer baby? Can it be done—and should it?

In this provocative talk, genetic counselor and epidemiologist Dr. Bhuma Krishnamachari traces the arc of genetic manipulation in human reproduction. She’ll unpack the science and ethics behind preimplantation genetic testing, CRISPR-edited embryos, sex selection, and the emerging frontier of polygenic screening for traits like intelligence and appearance.

Raised on art and music and once a science skeptic, Dr. Krishnamachari went on to earn three graduate degrees in genetics and epidemiology. She now moves between academia and biotechnology, blending analytical rigor with creative curiosity.

Come ready to rethink what you thought you knew about genes, choice, and the future of human reproduction. You may leave with fewer answers and many more questions—which is exactly the thrill of genomics.
