Join us as we celebrate 20 years of Peniel Guerrier’s Kriye Bode dance community! We’ll begin with a conversation featuring special guest speaker Véronëque Ignace, exploring the roots of folkloric Rabòday, its place within Haitian culture, and the ways rhythm, movement, and language evolve across generations. Together, we’ll consider what we recognize in the modern day music that shares its name and how knowing where something comes from can deepen the way we hear it, feel it, and experience it today. Following the conversation, we’ll bring that history to life through a demonstration of folkloric Rabòday, connecting the rhythm, movement, and cultural foundation we’ve just explored. Then, it’s time to move! Peniel Guerrier and master drummer Jean-Guy (Fanfan) René will lead participants through an immersive dance workshop, giving everyone the opportunity to learn and experience the movement and rhythm of Rabòday firsthand. Through conversation, demonstration, dance, and drum, we’ll explore the connections between past and present, honoring the roots of Rabòday while celebrating its evolution and continued influence on Haitian culture.Children 12 and under are free.
