The Power of Storytelling to Shape Perception

In partnership with the New Orleans Psychedelic Society, Lindsay Kent will use her debut novel, My Twin the Murderer, as a jumping-off point for a conversation about psychedelics, propaganda, mental health, and the power of storytelling to shape perception. Moving from Harry Anslinger and the early drug war through MKUltra, Nixon-era prohibition, “Just Say No,” the conversation will look beyond the familiar question of whether certain substances are “good” or “bad” to something more interesting: who gets to shape our perception of them, what agendas those stories have served, and how changing the story might change the future of psychedelic culture.

Part history, part cultural investigation, and part conversation about consciousness itself, the evening will examine what happens when storytelling becomes a tool of both control and liberation.

Lindsay Kent is an award-winning filmmaker, journalist, author, and psychedelic historian whose work explores America's counterculture and the stories we tell about drugs and the mind. Writing as The Hallucinarrator, she has contributed to High Times, DoubleBlind Magazine, and Psychedelic Pathways, and spent years researching the hidden history of psychedelics, including MKUltra and America’s war on drugs. Her debut psychological thriller, My Twin the Murderer, asks a provocative question: What if MKUltra never really ended?
