Founded on International Women’s Day in 2020, WITCHES of SCOTLAND began as a campaign seeking justice for the nearly 4,000 people, predominantly women, who were accused of witchcraft in Scotland between 1563 and 1736.The campaign was created around three goals: a legal pardon, a formal apology, and a national memorial for those persecuted under Scotland’s Witchcraft Act. In 2022, the campaign reached an extraordinary milestone when then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon delivered a formal apology acknowledging the historic injustice suffered by those accused of witchcraft. Their work toward remembrance and recognition continues today.Claire and Zoe are also the voices behind the WITCHES of SCOTLAND podcast, where they are joined by historians, legal experts, writers, and artists from around the world to uncover the stories of those accused under the Witchcraft Act.Together, they are the authors of How to Kill a Witch, which examines the history of the Scottish witch trials, the systems that allowed the persecution of thousands to flourish, and the uncomfortable question of what this history can still teach us today.
