Harvest in the Heritage District Free Play & Make Instrument Workshop

Celebrate fall festivals around the globe through music at a special Instrument Make & Play Workshop featuring the Harvest in the Heritage District Celebration Soundscape installation, created by local musician and composer Dalton Attig.

In collaboration with HD SOUTH – Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, ASU Professor Emeritus Duane Roen, and local musicians Maureen Roen and Dalton Attig, this workshop invites budding percussionists of all ages to explore how music connects communities and cultures through hands-on learning.

Learn: Take an interactive audio journey highlighting fall festivals from around the world. Scan QR codes to hear clips from the Celebration Soundscape musical composition created by Dalton Attig and discover the traditions that inspired the music.

Play: Try out a variety of percussion instruments—rain sticks, cajóns, kalimbas, thunder drums, wind wands, and more. Learn about their cultural origins and how to make simple versions at home.

Make: Create your own percussion instrument to take home. Bring a small hard plastic bottle with a lid (like an empty vitamin container), or use one provided at the workshop*. Enjoy the music of the Celebration Soundscape piece as you craft and decorate your instrument.
