Death Doesn't Look Like CSI

Death Doesn't Look Like CSI

Overview

The Hang Theory. A lecture series by Hang Dallas.

One speaker. One big idea. One good room.

Where · Times Ten Cellars.

Television crime dramas have given us a tidy, fast-paced version of forensic pathology: results in minutes, glamorous labs, and detectives who double as coroners. The actual work looks nothing like that. Dr. Jill Urban walks through what forensic pathologists really do in the morgue, from autopsy procedures and determining cause of death to working with law enforcement and testifying in court. The talk addresses the gap between what viewers see on CSI and what happens in a county medical examiner's office, where the work is technical, unglamorous, and governed by strict protocols. Dr. Urban is a Medical Examiner at the Dallas County Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at UT Southwestern, where she serves on the forensic pathology fellowship faculty. She is board-certified in forensic pathology, performs autopsies and testifies as an expert witness in this county, and is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the National Association of Medical Examiners.
