🧠 Lecture: "Friction-Maxxing: How to Manage in a Frictionless World"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Jamie Cohen
Join us for an eye-opening evening with Dr. Jamie Cohen as we explore how the “frictionless” internet is reshaping our offline lives. From immersive marketing to omnipresent media and viral characters, online content now sets the pace of culture, often overwhelming us with endless, chaotic feeds.
Building on the idea of “friction-maxxing”—intentionally slowing down and finding joy in difficulty—Dr. Cohen will introduce a powerful form of media literacy he calls “persistence.” Together, these concepts offer practical strategies to confront and counter the frictionless commodification of chaos, and to reclaim our time, attention, and agency online.
Dr. Jamie Cohen is a digital culture expert and associate professor of Media Studies at CUNY Queens College. For nearly two decades, he has studied, published, and presented on internet culture. His doctoral work focused on memes and digital culture, and he co-authored the first peer-reviewed paper on Pepe the Frog. He is also a faculty fellow of the Salzburg Academy of Media and Global Change.
