🧠 Lecture: "Ancient Egyptian True Crime"

🎙 Speaker: Dr. Amy Butner

Join us for a gripping night of tales ripped from the court records of Ancient Egypt. Dr. Amy Butner will take you inside real cases of crime and punishment along the Nile, from high-stakes tomb robberies and messy divorces to chilling murders that shook pharaonic society.

Far from the world of distant myths and mummies, you’ll meet very real people: scheming relatives, desperate thieves, wronged spouses, and judges trying to keep cosmic order—ma’at—intact. Through original documents and artifacts, Dr. Butner reveals how ancient Egyptians argued, lied, confessed, and sought justice thousands of years ago.

Like many of us, Dr. Amy had an ancient Egypt phase in elementary school—but she never grew out of it. She holds a master’s in Ancient Egyptian Language and Culture (yes, hieroglyphs) and a PhD in Ancient Egyptian Art History. She moved to New York to help curate “Divine Egypt,” a blockbuster special exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and now serves as an Egypt Expert for Smithsonian Journeys luxury tours and private tours of The Met’s famed Egyptian collection.
