Black Burials and Memory at Dorchester North Burying Ground

This outdoor talk with Sarah Jackson explores the physical and symbolic landscape of Dorchester North Burying Ground. Public historian Sarah will discuss the artistic traditions, burial practices, and spatial politics that shaped cemetery landscapes in New England. Her tour leads us to the sites where free and enslaved Black men were buried and explores the interesting connection their gravestones reveal between Boston and Rhode Island stoncraftsmen. Meet at the Columbia/Stoughton Street gate of Dorchester North Burial Ground at 12pm. This tour takes place rain or shine.

About our speaker:

Sarah Jackson is holds an MA in Public History student from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Her graduate research focused on the burial practices of free and enslaved African and African Americans in Boston and Rhode Island. She was formerly and intern at the Shirley-Esutis House and has also worked at Revolutionary Spaces, the Mass History Alliance, and the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives.
