Ackeem Salmon Artist Walkthrough at the YMCA

Join artist Ackeem Salmon for an intimate walkthrough of What History Leaves in Us on Thursday, September 17.

Through drawings, photography, and mixed-media works created between 2013 and 2025, Salmon will share the personal and historical threads that shape the exhibition—from his childhood in Jamaica and the living legacy of Jonkonnu, to his migration to Detroit at sixteen and the ways place, memory, and identity continue to overlap.

The walkthrough will offer deeper insight into works including Dance of Freedom and In the Silence of Ruins We Speak, exploring how celebration, ritual, care, and imagination can become forms of resistance and reclamation. Together, the conversation will consider history not as something distant, but as something carried in our bodies, landscapes, relationships, and the choices we make about what to bring forward.
