About the Un/Making Issue

In Un/Making, poet and theorist Fred Moten talks about practice (we talkin' bout practice?) and the social dimensions of Black aesthetic production with editor Mark Hernandez-Motaghy and creative director Cierra Peters. Jessica Gordon Nembhard, an acclaimed scholar-activist, sits down with us on the eve of the ten-year anniversary of her seminal work: Cooperative Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice, and discusses the promise of incarcerated workers' co-ops on the road to abolition. Terence Nance, multi-hyphenate visual artist and producer, speaks with writer Lawrence Burney on the spiritual power of cinema and storytelling. Esteban Kelly, veteran labor and harm-reduction organizer, discusses the potential of movement work within the Solidarity Economy to be an everyday healing practice, whether in the garden or in the cooperative space, with Art.coop’s Sruti Suryanarayanan.

This magazine is published by Ujima Press, and was initiated and supported by the Boston Ujima Project, Inc.: a Black-led organization building a cooperative business, arts, and investment infrastructure in Boston with a mission to return wealth to working-class communities of color.
