Whale Whispering in Berlin: Talk/Concert + Sacred Gathering by the River
Two days of collective healing, listening and singing with Michaela Harrison and the Humpback Whales of Bahia, Brazil
Michaela is an African American singer and Whale Whisperer from Washington, D.C, who is arriving in Berlin after her ninth Whale Whispering journey in Bahia, Brazil, where she has encountered, listened to and sang with humpback whales since she began the project in 2018. She is offering two unique events in Kreuzberg, Berlin:
- 15.9.26 at 18:30- "Wade in The Water: Whale Whispering across The Black Atlantic" An indoor evening in the auditorium of bUm Berlin. Michaela will share videos and recordings of the whales themselves as well as the songs, music and medicine that the whales are communicating with and through her. Tickets are 20 euro and can be purchased before hand or at the door.
- 16.9.26 at 18:00- An outdoor event on the banks of the canal in Kreuzberg, where the waters intersect just outside of the Biergarten Jockel (Ratiborstraße 14c, 10999 Berlin-Bezirk Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg). This will be a gathering of song, grief, and holding each other in healing by the water. This event is donation based and all are invited to bring blankets, snacks and warm beverages, rain gear in case of rain- and be prepared to sing to the waters!

"Whale Whispering is an ancestral commission, an ode to water, a work of interspecies translation and co-creation between me, humpback whales and other cetaceans and people, a diasporic healing quest, an exploration and transmutation of the legacy of trans-Atlantic enslavement through music. Based in Praia do Forte, Brazil, it is a soundtrack for personal, communal, and global transformation, a love song for whales, for Bahia, for Earth, for the ancestors and for life. As I address the generations of sexual trauma that have left my own womb and those of so many Black womb carriers diseased, I am learning to wail with the whales as a form of curative release, just as the Africans who crossed the Atlantic in slaving vessels surely did. This siren call summoning awareness of the unity of all being(s) and resonating with the movement in support of planetary healing is offered as a vibrational antidote to environmental destruction and racial, economic and gender-based violence. I am listening to and singing with the whales to tap into the echoes of the Middle Passage that are contained within their songs, to bring forth sounds that honor Nature’s prescription for this time of reckoning and share the wisdom of water as it is relayed to me. Through underwater and studio recordings, filmed documentation, blog posts and community gatherings focused on collective singing and water blessing rituals, Whale Whispering serves as a way of dreaming forward via the lens of the so-called past." - Michaela Harrison
