Bl/ack on Campus Navigating Anti-Blackness in Higher Education

Workshop designed to help Black students and families better recognize and respond to anti-Blackness in college.

This 90-minute virtual workshop is designed to help Black students, families, and supporters better recognize and respond to anti-Blackness in college and university settings. Participants will explore racialized harm, institutional policies, self-advocacy, and practical strategies for navigating higher education with greater clarity and confidence.Since Black students have been able to integrate into public education and higher education, there have always been concerns about their safety, belonging, and ability to thrive. However, we are currently in a moment where the barriers, harms, and racialized violence Black students experience within higher education are increasingly visible.Whether we’re thinking about incidents like the one that happened at LSU during Welcome Week, where two students were seen dragging a Black baby doll around campus with a rope, or the American Bar Association formally repealing the diversity and inclusion standard that law schools were previously expected to meet as part of the accreditation process, the landscape is changing. In short, something that was once institutionally incentivized through law school accreditation is no longer required. And then there is the current administration’s continuing effort to dismantle race-conscious programs, policies, and infrastructure. Most recently, the Treasury Department and IRS proposed regulations that would put significant pressure on private educational institutions by threatening their federal tax-exempt status if those institutions use race, color, national origin, or ethnicity in significant areas of higher education, including admissions, scholarships, loans, educational policies, and other school-supported programs. We are living in a time when the very institutions and structures Black students have relied on for protection and support are increasingly losing or being pressured to abandon the architecture that made those protections possible.Bl/ack on Campus: Navigating Anti-Blackness in Higher Education was created for this moment.

College campuses are often described as places where students can learn, grow, and explore their independence. But for Black students, navigating higher education can also mean navigating anti-Blackness; sometimes in obvious ways, and sometimes in ways that are much harder to name.

A professor says something that does not sit right.

A student is treated differently from their peers but cannot quite prove why.

A campus policy is supposed to offer protection, but no one seems able to explain how to use it.

A Black student experiences harm and somehow ends up being expected to educate everyone else, remain professional, keep performing academically, and figure out what to do next.Bl/ack on Campus: Navigating Anti-Blackness in Higher Education is a 90-minute virtual workshop designed to help Black students and the people who support them better understand, identify, and respond to anti-Blackness in college and university settings.Whether a student is preparing to enter college or heading back on campus for another semester, this workshop offers practical tools for navigating institutions that may not always provide the protection, dignity, or belonging Black students deserve.
During this workshop, we will explore:
Understanding Anti-BlacknessNot every form of racialized violence operates in the same way. Participants will learn to better distinguish anti-Blackness from other forms of racialized harm.Understanding Institutional ProtectionsParticipants will learn how to locate relevant university policies and begin interpreting what those policies actually say. We will also discuss the role and limitations of institutional and federal protections when racialized harm occurs.Dignity, Autonomy, and AgencyWe will examine dignity, autonomy, and agency as a framework for understanding what Black people should be able to expect from educational institutions and what it looks like when those things are being compromised.Self-Advocacy and BelongingParticipants will explore strategies for recognizing racialized harm, trusting their own experiences, communicating concerns, creating support systems, and advocating for themselves when institutional protections are unclear, inadequate, or unavailable. We will also talk about one of the most difficult lessons many Black people have had to learn:You are not responsible for managing the harm being done to you.Participants will learn to recognize when institutions are shifting responsibility for racial harm onto Black students and how to distinguish between what belongs to the student and what the institution is responsible for addressing.
You will leave this workshop better prepared to:

Identify and distinguish different forms of racialized violence, including anti-Blackness.

Find and begin interpreting campus policies and institutional protections.

Recognize when institutional responsibility is being shifted onto you or your student.

Understand dignity, autonomy, and agency as essential components of Black student well-being.

Build stronger practices of self-advocacy and belonging.

Communicate concerns more clearly with professors, staff, and administrators.

Determine possible next steps when institutional protections do not provide an adequate response.

You do not have to wait until something becomes a crisis to learn how to navigate it.And you do not have to experience anti-Blackness alone.Bl/ack on Campus is an opportunity to build the language, knowledge, and practical tools necessary to better protect yourself or a Black student you love while navigating higher education.
