Elastic Arts: AFROFUTURIST WEEKEND 2026 (Citywide)

Elastic Arts' 11th annual AfroFuturist Weekend is a FREE 4-day celebration of forward-looking music, art, and performance that envisions radically positive futures for Black people. Citywide in West Garfield Park, Bronzeville, Humboldt Park, Logan Square

“Olúwaṣẹ́gun, goes to a forest right before their rebirth as Messenger of the Ancestors, instead of Emperor of Africa’s imperial Ọ̀yọ́. Ẹlẹ́gbá, a messenger Òrìsà, warrior Angel, appears, as planned. They run off together, igniting a calamity of secrets and tensions between members of the Royal Family. How will this crisis change them before slavery and war violently dash across and crumble their palace doors?” Join us on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 3 PM, for a FREE staged reading at La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón / 3505 West North Avenue in Humboldt Park, Barrio Borikén, Chicago. The show starts promptly at 3:30 PM. Black Warrior Angel intends to be another loving guide to Africa’s global descendents in a quest for answers. This theatrical work-in-progress is written by Xavi Burgos, a Dark Matter Resident of Elastic Arts (in collaboration with La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón) for Afrofuturist Weekend 2026. This is the first in a two-part reading, as part of a series of new art works titled, “A New History of the Puerto Rican Peoples,” told in poetry, play, song, fabric, painting, performance, music, dance, ritual, and revolution.
